After a fairly sizeable break that included a global pandemic, becoming a parent and a whole bunch of other stuff scholars, theologians and extreme avant-garde theorists call “real life” East Anglia’s best kept secret Ploom returns with Murmuration, another EP of totally unique dubstep productions that go to show a little time away living life can sometimes be more productive than sitting in a studio staring non-stop at the same sidechain EQ whilst your electricity Smart Meter lights up like a Shell sponsored fruit machine.
Two years on from his debut EP Long Way From Caxton Point we see the ever evolving producer taking the dubstep sound further down his singular wormhole of off-kilter drum patterns, surging bass pressure and random bits of “WTF was that?” sampling, in the process creating another EP that is steeped in the formative years of dubstep that embraced freeform experimentation and weirdness for the sake of it, rather than the drill drums and sub-3 minute playlist targeting uniformity commonplace in the dubstep scene of 2023.
It’s not all misty-eyed revisionist throwback bullshit of course; although indebted to the music of those goldrush experimental early years Murmuration still sounds totally contemporary and cribs from the sonic aesthetics of absolutely no-one except the man himself. (But if you are hearing any particular artist in these tunes do let us know, as we’d love to hear who you’re hearing in there)
There’s one for the dancefloor in sub-pummelling lead single Brapple, one for the smokers in the stagger stepped Dat Zonky Gear and two for the “might just crank the filter up to mix out of this mayhem” crew in Starseed and Contemplating The Cosmos respectively.
We don’t care if you playlist it, but we do (massively) care that you play it loud on a beefy system.
